The Lady or the Tiger?, a short
story written by Frank Stockton, is an intriguing tale that involves a far away land, a semi-barbaric king and an unique justice
system that he has created to judge the criminals he deems as such.
The criminals that must be judged by this justice
system are faced with the ultimate decision. On the day of their judgement they are walked into an arena filled with
spectators from all over the land. They are positioned in front of two doors. Behind one door is a tiger and behind
the other door is a lady. The doors are exactly the same. The criminal must choose a door and open
it, excepting their fate.
As the story evolves, his daughter (the princess)
is faced with a tough decision. The semi-barbaric king has labeled her lover a criminal since he has loved her and is
not of royal blood. On the day that he faces the doors he turns to the princess for guidence. Which door will
she lead him to?
